Remembering Maya Angelou
The award-winning author, renowned poet and civil rights activist Dr. Maya Angelou was found dead in her Winston-Salem, N.C., home this morning. She was 86.
Caged Bird
by Maya Angelou
A free bird leaps
on the back of the wind
and floats downstream
till the current ends
and dips his wing
in the orange sun rays
and dares to claim the sky.
But a bird that stalks
down his narrow cage
can seldom see through
his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and
his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.
The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.
The free bird thinks of another breeze
and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn bright lawn
and he names the sky his own
But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams
his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.
The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.

Wayne's obituary is at: www.crawfordservices.com
Four years ago I wrote the following:
Doctor of Goodfeels: Wayne Holt
Our brilliant, gifted and good friend, Wayne,Though endowed with a sizable brain,
Has lived a life of a student,
Frugal, but certainly not prudent,
In fact, rather wickedly profane.
With a vision, astute but askew,
Clearly quite different than me or you,
Lost in a realm of his own
From another time and zone,
A genius, without a clue,
Obliviously insensible,
With a wit, incomprehensible,
Crude, sardonic and crass,
Often leaving us aghast,
Yet, endearingly defensible.
He has lived a simple life, infused
With the thought that things can be reused.
With a carbon-footprint so small
It’s hardly evident at all,
Surely, his excesses can be excused.
So, we’re here, at last, to celebrate
Our friend finishing his doctorate.
Since it took him quite awhile,
You may think he’s a bit senile,
But it’s just that he’s always been late
And a bit of a degenerate.
