This is a time for compassion and understanding and not fear and anger. It is a time for reflection, not defensiveness. With that said, in a democracy passionate debate must never be restrained or limited. However, there is a huge difference (a false equivalency) between fervently engaging a political adversary and offensively demonizing them, portraying them as the enemy to be targeted.

Whether there is or isn’t a causal connection, a correlation between Jared Loughner’s motives and the “far-right’s” crude demonizing of “liberals” as the enemy to be targeted, their offensive efforts, nonetheless, must be recognized and condemned as unacceptable vitriolic rhetoric that most assuredly encourages and may possibly provoke violence.
